Yay! Weekend! If you're reading this, it's almost time to switch off your anxiety brain and lean into two days of regenerating yourself for next week. Here's a mix of good news and interesting reads to help you finish the week well:
“Protecting New Yorkers from climate change is not optional.” Earlier this week, The Climate Mobilization Act was passed in New York City. Also, it's projected that India will overachieve its Paris Agreement targets by 60%! Can confirm, is delicious: 5-second vegan parmesan sprinkle recipe. Okay, maybe it was just a humblebrag, but I really liked Katy Perry for the caption on this instagram post. Things to hunt up at the library this weekend: I've been reading The How Not To Die Cookbook by Dr Michael Greger, a followup to his bestselling book How Not To Die. Whole-food plant-based recipes that look DELICIOUS: I plan to make the french toast, mac'n'cheese, black bean burgers and buffalo cauliflower with ranch dressing. Do not read while hangry. Also What Do We Want? The Story of Protest in Australia charts some of Australia's biggest social movements - anti-Vietnam war, women's liberation, indigenous rights - with narrative, quotes and historical photographs showing how some of the norms we now take for granted were hard-won by disruptive social action and normal people putting themselves on the line. So interesting and I AM LOVING IT. This was just a really delightful read about a parenting fail. (Well, is it a fail if it just makes you like your kid more?) Adorable cow friends. This week I've had a very dear friend visiting from interstate, and when she goes my little brother will be here for a few days! I'm super excited to spend time with them both and also conscious of the need for extra self-care and alone time (intense introvert over here). I hit the gym for ONE extra session this week and I'm amazed by the positive impact it had on my mental health. So...move your bodies this weekend, lovelies. xx Kamina

Happy weekend! Time to forget all your worries and focus on being joyful for a day or two. Here's some stuff to lift up your heart:
Woah. Ethiopia plants 350 million trees in 12 hours as part of a national initiative to plant 4 billion indigenous trees to combat climate change. Too cynical for Good News Friday? Make no mistake it is tough being pro-coal, just ask Ian the Climate Denialist Potato. Okay, that's enough climate stuff for a Friday. I'm not a huge fan of sweet potato in savoury dishes (it's so sweet!), so I usually end up squishing them into desserts. I've made these hidden berry dessert squares multiple times and they are a delight. Frugalwoods is the blog of Liz and Nate, who saved up enough money from their corporate jobs to buy a homestead in Vermont and live a financially independent life (although they both still choose to work from home). Liz blogs about simple living and extreme frugality, and I recently loved her book, Meet the Frugalwoods - look for it at your local library! Liz and Nate inspired me with their ability to maintain a fantastic lifestyle on next to nothing. I also loved this compelling and unbelievably convincing novel about a pair who travel back in time to insinuate themselves into Jane Austen's social circle and steal a manuscript she never published. The central story is unputdownable, but equally fascinating are the occasional hints of what life in the future (the protagonist's present) is like...they live in the wake of a time nobody likes to talk about, ominously called "the Die-Off". If you can find this book at the library, do it! An uplifting chat between two lovely people: Prince Harry interviews Dr Jane Goodall. Regarding interview skillz: How to talk to people. Weekend project? How to turn a tea towel into an apron. The combo of home-made art and secondhand finds in this apartment, plus the stories of the sisters who live in it, made this tour of a colourful loft apartment in Brooklyn a really happy read. What are you going to do for self-care in this coming week? I'm going to get on Groupon now and book myself a cheap Thai massage for next weekend - in between my upcoming PhD annual review and a couple of (very welcome and wanted) house guests over the next couple of weeks, plus the bravery required for a dentist visit yesterday, I have a lot going on emotionally and I think it's a good idea to carve out an hour that's just about relaxation and physical rejuvenation. Be brave this weekend, friends! xx Kamina Happy Friday! Time to soak up some good news, kickstart your self-care practice and go into the weekend ready to enjoy every precious Saturday and Sunday on our beautiful planet.
To cook this weekend: Simple lemon pasta. I recommend doubling the lemon and adding some generous slices of garlic fried quickly in olive oil - you'll thank me. Coffee drinker? Well, that's a relief. Illustrator Brenna Quinlan transforms research about environmental impacts into beautiful pictures of do-able actions. Follow her on instagram! Making joy a priority at work for better business outcomes. One of my top ten favourite humans Paul McCartney surprises fans by bringing Ringo Starr onstage during a recent gig on his North American tour. "Why I gave up drinking--and how it changed my life." Okay but also: Goodwill Wine donates 50% of profits to environmental, animal welfare and human aid charities, uses recycled packaging and offsets all of their deliveries with Greenfleet. To look for at the library this weekend: I'm only three chapters into this productivity book and it's already revolutionising my days. Loving this guide to spending less while enjoying everything more. For a bit of escapism, I've recently discovered the spy novels of Helen MacInnes. Don't stress til Monday! xx Kamina |
